Pilates
Joseph Pilates went to England in 1912, where he worked as a self-defense instructor for detectives at Scotland Yard. During World War I, Joe refined his ideas and trained internees in England in his system of exercise. He rigged springs for hospital beds, enabling bedridden patients to exercise against resistance, an innovation that led to his later equipment designs. Over the next half century, he refined the philosophy of his exercise regimen, incorporating many principles of modern dance and developed specialized exercise equipment.
Pilates had developed into a series of exercises that works on core strengthening with the theory that when you can get your core muscles — your abdominal muscles and your lower back muscles — strong, it frees up the joints in your limbs to move more efficiently. Pilates teaches flexibility of the limbs and core stability of the trunk muscles. It's a series of exercises that works with coordination, breathing, and body awareness. The philosophy of Pilates focuses on six main principles: centering, control, concentration, precision, breathing, and flow of movement.
At Rhode Island Rehabilitation Center, we concentrate on pelvic, shoulder, girdle, rib cage, and cervical placement so that everybody who is working through this flowing series of exercises is aware of where all those parts of their body are and they are able to control them through good strength in their core muscles.
RI Rehab's movement specialists incorporate the principles of Pilates into our individualized sessions. After a client has achieved sufficient progress, we offer the opportunity to enroll in intimate group classes at different levels, limited to 5-6 people. These clases are designed to continue resistive equipment training and increase clients' overall fitness level. A wide range of Pilates classes are offered: some specialized for clients with back and neck pain; some for older clients trying to maintain their endurance and flexibility; as well as advanced classes for anyone interested in their overall fitness. |
